The US Food and Drug Administration’s advisory panel on Thursday voted 12-to-13 to recommend that Pfizer Inc. pull the Viagra brand from the market because of an association of erectile dysfunction (ED) patients who are also taking the prescription drug sildenafil, the generic version of Viagra.
The panel of doctors, physicians and nurses who are the most prominent advocates for Pfizer, said they were opposed to the FDA’s recommendation and recommended that the company stop offering generic Viagra to patients for free. They also said the FDA had not provided sufficient information to warrant the recommendation, and that the panel had not evaluated whether the company’s decision to offer generic Viagra was based on clinical studies that indicated the drug may be safe to use.
The FDA has already made it clear that generic Viagra can be prescribed to people who suffer from erectile dysfunction, a condition which affects the ability to have and sustain an erection. It is also recommended that Pfizer remove the Viagra brand from the market because it could be associated with serious side effects such as priapism and damage to the penis.
The FDA’s recommendation also came after a report by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) indicated that men with erectile dysfunction, including those who do not have erections due to medical conditions, may be prescribed generic Viagra to treat their condition.
